AEV and the Jeeps That Arrived Early

A student project becomes a vehicle company

AEV traces its origin to Dave Harriton stretching Jeeps while he was a University of Montana student. The useful distinction is that he was not merely adding accessories. Changing wheelbase and body configuration forced the project to address structure, packaging, drivability, fabrication, and finish as one vehicle. AEV says the business began in 1997 in a one-room Missoula garage before expanding engineering and manufacturing work into the Detroit automotive ecosystem.

Before the LJ: proving the long-wheelbase Wrangler idea

AEV-built stretched TJs existed before Jeep released the long-wheelbase 2004 Wrangler Unlimited, unofficially called the LJ. Contemporary MotorTrend reporting says former Jeep engineer Dave Yegge had used AEV to stretch his personal TJ and that this experience played a role in development of the factory Unlimited. That does not make an early AEV stretch literally an LJ; it makes AEV a documented production precursor to the factory configuration.

The Brute was a pickup system, not just a top

AEV’s archived December 2002 Brute page already framed the vehicle as a mobile utility vehicle and included purchasing and standard-feature pathways. The later TJ conversion required a lengthened frame, cab closeout, hardtop, mounts, and a separate stamped-steel bed. A documented installation produced a 117.4-inch wheelbase and a 72-by-59-by-17-inch bed. This is why the Brute and the RubiTrux LJ half cab must be compared separately: one creates a stretched pickup structure; the other uses Jeep’s factory-stretched LJ body and wheelbase.

The Brute Double Cab anticipated the modern Gladiator

The JK-based Brute Double Cab extended the four-door Wrangler Unlimited frame by 23 inches between the axles and added a small rear extension for its composite bed. AEV announced customer production in March 2013, years before the JT Gladiator entered production. It was not the first vehicle to carry the Gladiator idea or name, but it demonstrated a modern four-door Wrangler-based pickup as a costly, professionally converted production vehicle.

HEMI integration made electronics part of the conversion

AEV’s JK HEMI documentation covers far more than placing an engine between the frame rails. It specifies engines, transmissions, mounts, cooling, wiring, PCM programming, ABS connections, model-year differences, and sales-order information tied to the vehicle VIN. AEV describes its 5.7- and 6.4-liter kits as the first complete Wrangler HEMI conversion kits; that “first” remains an attributed company claim, while the surviving installation guides independently demonstrate the program’s depth.

A dealer-sold Wrangler 392 before the factory 392

A 2014 listing offered a four-door AEV JK350 with a 6.4-liter HEMI and stated MSRP of $91,894. In 2015, Susquehanna CDJR, identifying itself as an AEV Authorized Dealer, advertised a 6.4-liter HEMI JK350 at $89,943 before promotional pricing. These vehicles were conversions rather than factory Rubicon 392s, but they put integrated 6.4-liter Wranglers into a dealer-sales environment years before Jeep introduced the factory 2021 model.

Nth Degree brought an engineering lineage with it

Nth Degree Mobility owner Jim Frens was a former Jeep chassis engineer who developed unusually integrated TJ suspension and underbody products. When Nth Degree closed in 2007, AEV announced an asset purchase covering a significant amount of inventory and product line, planned to resume most of the suspension line, and said it would integrate design and development in Missoula. Later reporting describes AEV as acquiring Nth Degree suspension and identifies Frens as AEV’s suspension engineer. The narrower contemporary transaction language is retained here to avoid erasing Nth Degree’s independent history.

RubiTrux helped move the engineering into customers’ hands

AEV did not operate alone. Builders and dealers converted donor vehicles, installed systems, marketed finished Jeeps, handled trade-ins, and supported owners. RubiTrux is a particularly important Southeast example: its archive separates AEV Brutes, RubiTrux LJ half cabs, and HEMI conversions into formal retail categories. The relationship shows how an engineering company, specialty builder, dealer channel, parts suppliers, and customers collectively create an aftermarket vehicle category.

The larger change in the aftermarket

AEV helped establish the expectation that a premium Jeep build should behave as a coordinated vehicle. Larger tires affected calibration and stability control; powertrain swaps affected cooling, software, braking, and serviceability; suspension height affected steering and road behavior. The enduring historical contribution is not one bumper or conversion. It is the idea that the aftermarket could develop a modified Jeep with the systems thinking normally associated with an automaker.
